Abstract

This article aims to understand the relationship between ethical politics and the revitalization of Islamic teaching in Indonesia that underlies the tradition of Islamic teaching to this day. The development of Islam in Indonesia is rarely linked to the history of colonialism, although many transformations of Islamic thought and teaching occurred almost simultaneously with the implementation of ethical politics in the late colonial era. This study uses a qualitative method with a historical anthropology approach. The research data is entirely sourced from historical literature analyzed using the perspective of Foucault’s power-relations theory. This study concludes that ethical politics has an indirect impact on the revitalization of Islamic teaching. Antipathy towards things that smell of Europe makes Islamic circles carry massive and comprehensive Islamic teaching from the Middle East as a basis for the development of Islamic teaching in Indonesia. This article implies that the ethical politics of the colonial era contributed to the revival of Muslim intellectuals and strengthened the position of Islamic education in Indonesia.
